Through the Long Desert: Georgia O’Keeffe and Frank Lloyd Wright

November 19, 2025

Join The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy for a conversation with architectural historian Sarah Rovang about her forthcoming book, Through the Long Desert: Georgia O’Keeffe and Frank Lloyd Wright. This richly-illustrated volume explores newfound connections between the two American cultural icons and sheds light on their lives, work, and mutual love of the American desert. Starting in 1933, O’Keeffe and Wright exchanged roughly two dozen letters in which they expressed admiration for one another but also their passion for the places that informed them—many of which they had in common. Juxtaposing images highlighting shared aspects of their individual biographies and work, this unique take on American creative expression explores the nature of artistic friendship and the idea of “home.”

Sarah Rovang is an architectural historian and writer. Holding a Ph.D. in the history of art and architecture from Brown University, she presented her work at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy 2023 annual conference and has served as a research fellow at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Her award-winning fieldwork, supported by the Society of Architectural Historians’ H. Allen Brooks Fellowship, explores how modern design shapes our sense of place. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The book is available for pre-order from Rizzoli.

This talk is sponsored by Rotary Historic Preservation Fellowship.
