The New York Architectural Legacy of Kevin Roche

December 1, 2022

The Manhattan buildings of architect Kevin Roche (1922–2019) are an excellent primer to view the history and development of postwar architecture in post-industrial New York.  Join historian James Russiello and the Municipal Art Society  for an architectural monograph series on the life, influence, and New York works of notable architects, with this presentation examining Roche’s work in the city.

Irish-born, Kevin Roche studied under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology, came to New York to work on the United Nations complex, and rose to be lead designer at the office of Eero Saarinen before that architect’s sudden death. Completing many of Saarinen’s most notable projects, Roche went on to form Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates, a firm that designed many significant city institutions from the 1960s through his death.
