The Getty Foundation has awarded 14 sites around the world 2020 Keeping It Modern grants. The only site in the United States to be named an awardee is the First Presbyterian Church (1958) by Wallace K. Harrison (1895–1981), of Harrison & Abramovitz, in Stamford, CT —also known as the “Fish Church.”
In 2016, Highland Green Foundation, which supports First Presbyterian, received a grant to develop a conservation plan for the church. This year’s $240,000 grant will fund projects that will help to conserve, repair, and stabilize the dalle de verre elements that make up the church’s stained-glass walls. Dalle de verre is a french, glass art technique using thicker glass with chipped and jagged edges that produce more reflection in light. It is especially prevalent in modern religious architecture, so this project team will be in a position to provide preservation best practices for the field after their project is complete.
