The Municipal Art Society will host architectural historian Anthony W. Robins for a virtual tour titled The Twin Towers – Remembering the World Trade Center. This “city-within-a-city” housed 50,000 employees, welcomed 80,000 to 100,000 visitors every day to its Twin Towers, and briefly stood as the tallest structures in the world. Robins will utilize scholarship from his book Classics of American Architecture: The World Trade Center to discuss post-World War II downtown redevelopment, the origins of the Trade Center concept, the search for an architect, the evolution of the design, the engineering feats required for the towers’ construction, and the critical response to the project. The tour will close with a brief review of the new complex.
