The Evolving Skyscraper

June 10, 2025

Join The National Arts Club and Michael Wyetzner, architect and host of a video series with Architectural Digest, in a conversation about the evolution of skyscraper design in New York City. Wyetzner will dive into five kinds of towers as well as a history of skyscrapers showing towers designed by Louis Sullivan including the Wainwright Tower in St. Louis and the Bayard Building in New York, as well as the generating factors that made skyscraper design possible. The presentation will include a traditional setback tower (Empire State Building), glass curtain wall tower (Lever House), plaza tower (Seagram Building), expressed structure tower (NY Times Building), and a super-tall tower (432 Park Avenue). Each example will be broken down by structure, material, size and architectural style. Zoning laws will also be explored, and the way they shaped the configuration of each example.
