Pioneers of the Dutch Modern House

September 2, 2021

The Iconic Houses Foundation is presenting its 6th International Iconic Houses Conference this September. This year’s online Iconic Houses event replaces the conference that was scheduled in Rotterdam for 2020. The online format now makes it possible to see the twenty Iconic Houses located the Netherlands, including houses in Amsterdam, Delft, Drachten, Groet, Groningen, Nagele, Otterlo, Rotterdam, Schaik, The Hague, Utrecht, West-Kinderdijk and Winssen. Several of these are examples of social housing, an area in which the Netherlands is particularly rich.

The online program provides insights into Dutch residential architecture of the 20th century. Participants will learn about and discuss examples of innovative, avant-garde residential architecture in five online modules each consisting of a keynote lecture (in English) and a video tour of relevant houses (spoken Dutch with English subtitles).

The module themes are:

• Hygiene and Health in the Modern Home
• Palaces for the People
• A Woman’s Place: Clients, Architects, Promoters
• Experiments with Space
• Home as Self-Portrait: Architect’s Houses
