Paparazza Moderna: Lovers & Frenemies

October 13, 2025
Through November 29, 2025

This Yale School of Architecture exhibition by the artist duo Lake Verea features visceral encounters with single-family houses that expose the stories behind the facades of Modern architecture.

The first chapter, Frenemies (2011–2018) focuses on houses designed in the United States by iconic Modernist architects, particularly spotlighting pairs of architects who started as friends, then suffered a rupture and were later reconciled: Walter Gropius vs. Marcel Breuer; Rudolf M. Schindler vs. Richard J. Neutra; and Philip Johnson vs. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The resulting portraits of each house are not documentary but rather are compositions of multiple photographs capturing an immediate and personal encounter with the architecture.

A second chapter, Lovers (2025), pivots from the United States to Europe and from men to women. The product of 9000 km of travel through eleven countries, this series highlights the contributions of female architects, designers, and artists that were often obscured by historical mores and partnerships with male architects, often their romantic partners. These photos bear witness to the work of Eileen Gray, Charlotte Perriand, Nelly van Doesburg, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Truus Schröder, Lotte Stam-Besse, Aino Marsio-Aalto, Elissa Aalto, Grete Prytz Kittelsen, Ragna Grubb, Inger Exner, Lilly Reich, Eszter Pécsi, and Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.
