Modern Worship: Self-driving tour of Philadelphia-area sacred architecture

October 15, 2023

Join Docomomo US/Greater Philadelphia for a first hand look at some of the Philadelphia region’s most impressive takes on sacred architecture with a self-driving tour of five Modern houses of worship. Knowledgeable and noted architects and architectural historians will lead each of the five site tours. Each tour will be timed to give ample opportunity for you to reach the next destination. Join fellow modern architecture enthusiasts in learning more about the Philadelphia modern environment and experience the awe-inspiring places of worship.

The tour will start at the Vincent Kling-designed Episcopal Academy Christ Chapel (now the Cardinal William Foley Campus Center at St. Joseph’s University) and will continue on to notable sites including Arrupe Hall (Moto Designship, 2021), Temple Adath Israel (Pietro Belluschi, 1956–1959), Beth Sholom Congregation (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1953–1959), and Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting House and Skyspace (James Turrell, artist, and James Bradberry, architect).

The event begins and ends at the Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting House and James Turrell’s Skyspace installation at sundown. The Docomomo US/Greater Philadelphia event is co-sponsored with Beth Shalom Preservation. This event is part of Docomomo US Tour Day 2023.
