Step inside midcentury modern homes and learn about Westchester’s “hidden” neighborhoods of historic homes in Briarcliff Manor, NY, with Histoury, Historical Tours by Design.
What may be passed by as an unassuming cul-de-sac, Holly Place is a lovely haven of about a dozen unique dwellings from the 1960s and 1970s by the architectural, engineering, and landscape design firm Wenning Associates.
Special interior stops include a 1966 home that blends dramatic height and expansive glass with the warmth of wood ceilings and textured brick and a home from 1967 anchored by its octagonal foyer that combines full-height windows, clerestories, and partial walls to fill the spaces with light and playful shadows.
Led by MIT graduate Harry Wenning, the Wenning Associates design team included the award-winning landscape architect Armand Benedek. Wenning and his firm designed a long list of impressive modernist buildings in the region, including churches, country clubs, and residences. One of his homes, a hilltop oasis with indoor pool, was a featured stop on Histoury’s tour of modernist homes in Fairfield, CT, earlier this year.
Wenning’s name may not be a household one, but his talent is beginning to get some recognition. The firm’s enclave of homes known as Robinwood, in nearby Ossining, NY, was recognized for its architectural significance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Join the Holly Place tour for the unique chance to step inside some Wenning-designed homes..
