Downtown Moderns

April 2, 2022

Aficionados of mid-20th century Modernism often overlook Lower Manhattan. The Municipal Art Society is hosting a walking tour of the area’s Modern treasures with architectural historian Matt Postal. Heading north from Wall Street, participants will view several freestanding office towers by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, important sculptures by Isamu Noguchi and Jean Dubuffet, as well as memorable works by I. M. Pei and Kelly & Gruzen, who transformed the civic center in the 1960s and 1970s, including two distinguished apartment complexes, each in different ways, inspired by Le Corbusier.

In-person tours are limited to 25 attendees and are held outdoors. Walking tours bring individuals into close proximity with each other, we therefore recommend that all tour goers wear masks during the tours, regardless of vaccination status. Your tour guide and your fellow tour participants will thank you for your cooperation. Should the tours happen to venture indoors, many places require masks and/or proof of vaccination.
