Another Modern Loss in the Hamptons: Otto and Eloise Spaeth House Demolished

The Otto and Eloise Spaeth House, designed in 1956 by George Nelson and Gordon Chadwick, has been demolished. The shingle-style house was known for its rear, oceanside shingle wall. All that remains is the home’s support structure. Read the full story reported by Docomomo US.

Sotheby’s is next for the Whitney Museum’s Breuer building in New York

Sotheby’s has acquired the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Marcel Breuer designed building on Madison Avenue with plans to transform the building into a flagship gallery open to the public and the company’s new headquarters. The deal is rumored to be $100 million with a move in slated for 2025 after some of the interior spaces are reimagined for salesroom function.

Nominations are set to open for the 2024 World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize on June 29. The biennial prize for which Knoll is founding sponsor will be awarded this fall to an architect, urban designer/planner, or other design professional or firm, to recognize an innovative intervention that preserved and saved a threatened Modern building or complex.

Learn more about landscape theorist, author and practitioner James Rose by volunteering as an intern or docent at the James Rose Center this Fall. Interns and docents contribute to the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Center and may have the opportunity to live at the Center.
